Artist’s Statement

“These vessels are a reflection of my educational training as both a glassblower and a goldsmith.  In each piece, I layer flakes of multi-colored glass that I’ve made along with copper wire from the inner workings of arcade games that I’ve loosely knit and encase it all in clear glass.

Each vessel is a singular piece of art, with hand knit copper wire encased within the clear and colored glass, making unique patterns after each gather of glass.”

-Robert DuGrenier

Biography

Robert DuGrenier’s work in glass, sculpture, and design spans both traditional and experimental arenas.  The artist works in collaboration with architects and designers to create custom glass sculptural installations and chandeliers installed in hotels, stores, museums and private residences around the world.

DuGrenier began in New York City by working on the redesign of the flame for the Statue of Liberty, commissioned to create and produce the 1/12th scale model from which the French artisans sculpted the new flame.

DuGrenier’s breadth of creative output brings a unique vision to the artist’s work in glass, with series such as “Out of the Ashes”, “Spur of the Moment” and “Copper Encasements” as examples.  “Out of the Ashes” uses salvaged metal and cast iron born out of the tragedy of a barn fire.  “Spur the Moment” is an installation of living sculptures of blown glass around fruit trees.  “Copper Encasements” is a collection of blown colored glass flakes gathered around hand knit copper wire salvaged from arcade games, then encased in clear glass.
