Artist's Statement
When I look around, I am especially interested in light, color and movement, light and shadow in the sky, the farm at twilight and the sun splashing on the ground and hills. All paintings are stimulated from photographs taken of particular places I have lived or visited: Andover, Vermont, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and Mendocino, California. They record what interests me in my environment and collectively amount to a diary of my inner growth as reflected in the landscape as metaphor for adventures in the spiritual realms. I appreciate all of the help I have received as a student at Antioch College (BA), Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (Four Year Certificate), Bard College (MFA), and Self Realization Fellowship (meditation group).
Biography
Martha Nichols works in oil paint creating landscapes with subject matters of Mountains, Ocean, Sky, and Farms. Nichols’s practice focuses on light, color and movement. The artist pursues this study in a way which is not attached to the realistic portrayal of the landscape, and rather is a representation of Nichols’s journey of inner growth and adventures in the spiritual realms. Nichols has worked as a professional and master of the arts and humanities for six decades, with illuminative careers in Literature, English, Fine Arts, and Painting. With many notable exhibitions both Solo and group in Philadelphia and the greater Northeastern Seaboard, Nichols is represented in numerous Museum, University, and Private Collections. Since relocating to Vermont, Nichols continues work as a professor and painter.
