About the Show

Spaulding Dunbar PHOTO-POET Solo Show

Canal Street Art Gallery presents: The Spaulding Dunbar PHOTO-POET Solo Show. This is the artist’s inaugural solo show at Canal Street Art Gallery. The show OPENING is April 8th from 5-7PM and is on view to the public through May 7th. Join us in Historic Downtown Bellows Falls on Friday the 8th to meet and learn more about the artist, celebrate local art and be a part of the festive opening of this show!

The Spaulding Dunbar Photo-Poet Solo Show presents archival and UV coated original prints of photographs taken by the artist on Anjali Farm in Vermont, along the New England coastline, and while visiting family in India. The collection tells tales of cycles, rhythms, order within chaos, familiar connections, comforting realities and obvious similarities we all experience. The Solo Show shares the artist’s passion for his land stewardship experience through narrative images and portraits telling stories of the natural environment and the daily experience of human habitation in it. Installed in parallel with the prints is poetry written by the artist. The prose expresses the narrative of Dunbar’s process and practice using the camera to capture the photo-poetry of the natural and built world.

“I hope that this body of work will inspire you to cherish what we have, who we are and who we can become collectively. My passion and purpose are to connect all people with the soil, plants and the community we share in our lives. The photographic images are from before, during, and after the global pandemic that arrested most of us and the routines we knew. They tell stories of moments in time and places on earth. What a hard thing it has been to change how, where, and when we do the things we always took for granted in this overdeveloped society! I feel so fortunate to have been living in Vermont for the last two decades with a focus on a less-is-more way of life as a small farmer and community organizer.” – E. Spaulding Dunbar

E. Spaulding Dunbar, based in South Londonderry, Vermont, lives and works from Anjali Farm with his family, and is an active community organizer. Dunbar’s 25 years of organic farming experience on Anjali Farm greatly influences his artwork, his community outlook with his methods of servant leadership and project management. Dunbar is the Co-Founder and Business Director at Canal Street Art Gallery (CSAG), the current President of the Bellows Falls Downtown Development Alliance (BFDDA), a Board member of Main Street Arts (MSA) in Saxtons River, and recently has held the position of Development Director for the Town of Rockingham, Vermont. Artist's Statement on the Spaulding Dunbar Photo-Poet Solo Show

My first ever Solo Show comes at a time when many people are feeling like they have been solo in so many ways. The last two years have had a tremendous unknown toll on the human being. But, even more on the “human-doing”, as not so affectionately referred to in the USA. What a hard thing it has been to change how, where, and when we do the things we always took for granted in this overdeveloped society! I feel so fortunate to have been living in Vermont for the last 25 years with a focus on a - less is more - way of life as a small farmer and community builder. I have most of what I need around me in this village and my friends and family are close by, for the most part.

The Spaulding Dunbar Photo-Poet Solo Show is comprised of photographs that I have taken on Anjali Farm, along the New England coastline and while visiting my family in India. For me to share stories of the natural environment and the built world we flow through was paramount. Taking pictures or living through a camera is not an objective of mine and that is not what I wanted for this Show. Rather, to tell tales of cycles, rhythms, order within chaos, familiar connections, comforting realities and obvious similarities we all share will help express the sameness and oneness that is life on earth.

This collection that you will be experiencing at the Canal Street Art Gallery is from before, during and after the global pandemic that arrested most of us and the routines we knew. I hope that this body of work will inspire you to cherish what we have, who we are and who we can become collectively as animals on this planet that direly need one another for individual greatness towards a higher consciousness resulting in a more positive shared daily experience.

In a parallel creative outflow of energy and love I have written poetry inspired by my original photographs presented in this Solo Show. The prose has been inside me and has helped guide the camera as a tool to capture the photo-poetry of the natural world we all reside in. My passion and purpose are to connect people with the soil, plants and animals we share our lives with. I am grateful for this ability to give a needed perspective in an ever more autocratic, materialist, degrading and exhausting consumptive society. Perhaps, best said this way,

There's a natural mystic blowing through the air. If you listen carefully now you will hear.

This could be the first trumpet, might as well be the last. Many more will have to suffer, don't ask me why.

Things are not the way they used to be. I won't tell no lie. One and all got to face reality now. There's a natural mystic blowing through the air. If you listen carefully now you will hear.” -  Bob Marley
