Working Artist Program

Debbie A. Barton, based in Springfield, Vermont, uses collage, quilting, and journaling to reflect the artist’s love of rural New England, nature, train travel, vintage fabrics, and untold stories. Barton’s creative practice is informed primarily by the need to care for the earth and its inhabitants. The artist prefer to use thrifted, dead stock, or otherwise unwanted papers, textiles, and other materials that were headed to landfills but have stories yet to be told beyond the tragedy of waste. Many of the materials have “imperfections” which become an integral part of those stories, inviting the viewer to imagine their previous makers, owners, and histories.
