CLARE ADAMS Painting With Light is a Solo Show of the artist’s most recent work. Adams uses the traditional techniques of reverse painting, enameling, and staining glass to depict a detailed view of the cycle of natural life on the farm and in the garden. Painted and stained entirely by the artist, artworks such as “Sunflower and Crickets” and “Dalias & Bees” use traditional materials and methods like silver stain, and the grisaille technique in which black paint is scratched away and color is applied on top. Starting with recycled window glass, this process requires numerous firings in Adam’s solar powered kiln, and uses modern, nontoxic enamel formulas. Each artwork is composed of many of these hand painted and stained pieces of glass soldered together in patterns inspired by quilts and are beautiful on a wall or in a window.

Watch Meet the Artist LIVE! Join us for this special live event to meet the artist Martha Nichols, her husband John, with friends Kathleen and Tom from Studio Time and Space Meditation Center in Springfield Vermont all in conversation on the MARTHA NICHOLS Mountain Sea and Sky solo show.

“It is terrific to get that feeling of calmness and a little clarity and a sense of happiness which I hope these paintings convey. They are a result of work on myself, work on settling the mind.” - Martha Nichols

“I have been a meditator since the age of seventeen, off and on. One of the things that’s done for me, I think, is to settle the mind. And, as you settle the mind a kind of glow from within happens. It can’t happen, that glow inside can’t happen until the crazy monkey settles down a little bit in the mind: the flow of thoughts that are so rapid with all of us. It just is terrific to get that feeling of calmness and a little clarity and a sense of happiness. Which I hope these paintings convey too. They are a result of work on myself, work on settling the mind.” - Martha Nichols

View anytime after here: canalstreetartgallery.com/events

Canal Street Art Gallery presents: MARTHA NICHOLS Mountain Sea and Sky exhibit open April 7th, on view to the public through May 8th. The Canal Street Art Gallery is honored to share the oil paintings of Martha Nichols, one of its newest represented artists. The MARTHA NICHOLS Mountain Sea and Sky show is the artist’s second exhibition, and inaugural solo show with the gallery, in Bellows Falls, Vermont.

“Color, light and more recently, sound are my primary interests. We are surrounded by ever changing light, color and sound as we go about our days in the landscape. I explore the vast variety of colors which I can mix, and their interactions with each new painting. The elements of the landscape or sky are used as a foundation for the design of each piece. It evolves from there until I am satisfied that some sense of glowing color has been achieved. My interest in obtaining a glow of color really comes from my meditation experience. Light and color in the landscape ultimately act as metaphors for inner exploration, as I continue to grow through meditation.” -Martha Nichols.

Martha Nichols has worked as a professional and master of the arts and humanities for six decades, with illuminative careers in literature, english, fine art, and painting. The artist's most recent work shows the subjects of mountains, sky, and ocean. Nichols’s practice focuses on light, color and movement. The artist pursues this study in a way which is not attached to the realistic portrayal of the landscape, and rather is a representation of Nichols’s journey of inner growth and travels in the spiritual realms. Nichols has studied and earned degrees at Antioch College, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Bard College, and the Self Realization Fellowship. With many notable exhibitions both solo and group in Philadelphia and the Northeast including the Southern Vermont Arts Center, Nichols’s work is in numerous museums, universities, and private collections. Since relocating to Andover, Vermont, Martha continues her life work as a professor and artist.

OUR NEXT VIRTUAL GALLERY EVENT

Live on Facebook here: @canalstreetartgallery

View anytime after here: canalstreetartgallery.com/events

Canal Street Art Gallery presents: GRETCHEN SEIFERT In Abstraction open March 3rd, on view to the public through April 3rd. This is the first show in Canal Street Art Gallery’s new Spring lineup of Solo Shows, and the Bellows Falls Vermont gallery’s 2021 Season of sharing local artists and artwork!

“I see abstraction as an opportunity to be curious and to discover. There is an important imaginal quality, a dreamlike exploration that occurs. Abstraction has always, for me, been a doorway into the complex of individual-ness, or, how we relate personally to our unconscious. Not what is in thought, but what is embodied; felt.” -Gretchen Seifert.

Canal Street Art Gallery is honored to introduce the artwork of Gretchen Seifert, a visual artist and musician who has recently relocated to Brattleboro, Vermont. Please welcome this accomplished and prolific artist to our community. GRETCHEN SEIFERT In Abstraction, is, for the first-time, an exclusive glimpse into nearly three decades of art making by a solo artist, Gretchen Seifert. This retrospective exhibits artwork by Seifert including silver gelatin prints of the artist’s photographs, multimedia works on paper, paintings, and drawings.

Gretchen Seifert’s artwork is created by the artist to heal trauma through visually representing the relationships between sensations, feelings, and memory. Using her training as a classical musician, Seifert is inspired by experimental music to create her mainly abstract visual work. In many ways Seifert’s journey begins with using art as a way to interact with the world. A camera enabled the artist to find the moment to release the shutter showing visually how Seifert experiences life. Gretchen Seifert has degrees from Boston University and Northwestern University in cello performance. She worked as a musician until the birth of her first child at which time she was given a camera which jump-started her love affair with visual art. Seifert then continued working as a professional photographer, and now works primarily in mixed media.

It has been my hope that it could lead to a graphic novel. Whatever the case, along those lines, the art that I am showing reflects how our lives are intricately enmeshed with the world of Nature around us.” - Charles Norris-Brown
