About the Show
Canal Street Art Gallery presents: The SPRING SALON a new exhibition which is being hung in the floor-to-ceiling Salon style. The exhibit showcases over one hundred and fifty artworks from the gallery’s twenty-six represented artists. It will open May 12th and is on view to the public through June 11th. Join us on 3rd Friday Gallery Night in Historic Downtown Bellows Falls from 5-7PM on May 20th to celebrate and meet the artists!
The SPRING SALON is the first exhibition to be installed at Canal Street Art Gallery in this manner, hung floor-to-ceiling. The original Salon in Paris was a product of the Enlightenment in the early 18th century. The Canal Street Art Gallery SALON is a rare chance for the public to view the gallery’s large collection of art from its talented local artists all at one time. The show features artworks from these artists; Clare Adams, Spaulding Dunbar, Mindy Fisher, Nancy Fitz-Rapalje, Kathie Gatto-Gurney, Kim Grall, Corinne Greenhalgh, Medora Hebert, Carol Keiser, Nicholas Kekic, Marcie Maynard, Jeanne McMahan, Lisa Eckhardt McNealus, Caroline Ryan Morgan, Martha Nichols, Charles Norris-Brown, MC Noyes, Phyllis Rosser, Melissa Rubin, Matthew Saxton, Gretchen Seifert, and John van de Does.
Canal Street Art Gallery is honored to introduce their newest represented artists: Whitney Barrett, Robert Burch, Judy Hawkins, and Maurine Sutter.
Whitney Barrett, based in Saxtons River, Vermont, works in collage, pen and ink, acrylic paint, and found text to explore questions of identity, story, and how we present to the outside world. A deep lover of fairy tales and fantasy, Barrett is interested in playing with the metaphors of animals and how we know ourselves as humans. “I am interested in the way stories are told and implied, assumptions and miscommunication, as well as the tension between expectation and desire.” - Whitney Barrett
Robert Burch is a master glass blower based in Putney, Vermont, for over 40 years. Burch’s glass work consists of vases, perfume bottles, paperweights and sculptural pieces, with his current specialty being works that incorporate veiled silver oxide with delicate bubble patterns. “Most of my inspiration comes from my natural surroundings, and is further enhanced by the beauty of the glass in its molten state.” - Robert Burch
Judy Hawkins, based in Westminster West, Vermont, works in oil paint using light, color, and form to create a sense of place inspired by the landscape. The process of change each work goes through is important to the artist in that she continually learns something new whenever brush and color are put to canvas. “When I paint, I have an internal ‘dialog’ with myself. Each new experience brings a new perspective and vocabulary to my work, not unlike life.” - Judy Hawkins
Maurine Sutter, based in Amherst, Massachusetts, is a photographer, printing large and small scale fine art photography images in series’ such as “Beachtrash,” “Provincetown Dunes,” and “The Inflatables.” “My objective is to attract the viewer’s attention by making conventionally pretty pictures of an ugly reality.” - Maurine Sutter
