Aspen & Sequoia

Illusion of Separation

October 16 - December 13

Join us on Bellows Falls 3rd Fridays from 5-7pm for an opening reception and to meet the artist.

The Aspen & Sequoia duo show, by artists Aspen Lapham Fersch and Sequoia Isis Mayer, both based in Rochester, Vermont, presents a mixed media collaboration including portraits of impactful family members and friends, and found objects of deep personal importance. These two series, titled ‘Mod(ern) Portraits’, and ‘In A Jar’ are inspired by both artist’s love for the natural world as expressed by observing and immersing themselves in nature, along with travel, encouraging kindness, and the process of learning new things. ‘In a Jar’ is influenced by the book In A Jar by Deborah Marcero. Both Aspen and Sequoia are students at The Penn Program, a place and project based independent education program, in Rochester, Vermont.

Artist's Statement

Mod(ern) Portraits: Portrait photography led to tracing with Sharpies, which was followed by Mod Podge on construction paper. The final step was using paint pens to fill negative space in the artwork. The assorted portraits are of impactful family members and friends.

In A Jar: Collected found items of deep personal importance fill a variety of repurposed jars. These items represent a physical attempt at holding onto places and experiences that have impacted us. The exhibit was inspired by the book In A Jar by Deborah Marcero.
