Artist's Statement
I have been involved in artistic endeavors for as long as I can remember. After my children were mostly grown, I began taking classes at the River Gallery School in Brattleboro where I quickly fell in love with pastels. My initial exposure to pastels and return to art making at the River Gallery School, I have taken numerous workshops with master pastel artists locally and throughout the state. I have almost exclusively painted in pastels for the past 15 years with a few diversions in watercolor. My subject matter is the landscape, primarily of Vermont and New England. Pastel offers the perfect medium to achieve the rich color and excitement that I wish to achieve in my landscape paintings. I have traveled to France, England, to the Western US and Canada, and most recently to Italy, where I sketched and photographed scenes to paint in my studio.
Statement about works in ART FOR ALL Seasonal Group Show
While many of the works submitted are considered "small works" which is something relatively new to me, the subject matter continues to be what I enjoy most: landscapes near and not so near that capture the light and/or some special mood.
Biography
Canal Street Art Gallery is pleased to present the work of Deedee Jones in the ART FOR ALL Seasonal Group Show. A passionate pastel painter, Jones pursues a study of color and emotion through her observations of the Vermont and New England landscape. Jones began her education in art at the Art Students League in New York City in 1969, and has continued to hone her process at the River Gallery School in Brattleboro, Vermont. Jones’s work shows a range of expression from bright colors and textures, to dark, contrasting and moody landscapes. The artists travels to Italy have brought a smaller scale to her recent work, shown here alongside her Vermont landscapes.
