Artist’s Statement

“This body of work is emotion and memory based. It is an exploration of the residual effects of our daily, human interactions and how we are affected by the choices we make.

In the course of human exchange, we make myriad choices - some informed, some by default. Though we may visit multiple opportunities to re-evaluate our responses, true feelings may not emerge until the interchange has been processed over time. Reality forces us into the wake of our decision's consequences. In these paintings, I strive to use texture, color and a fragmented linear quality to provide a metaphor for memories whose essences become more precious - or more painful - over time.

Painting requires that I surrender to a deeper incentive. Relying on my instincts is an essential element for this body of work.”

Biography

Christine Cole’s series of oil paintings on exhibit in “Anniversary!” at Canal Street Art Gallery are a selection from a larger group of the artist’s work of abstract compositions.  The works are composed of large areas of subtly changing greyscale values, intersected and fragmented with brighter and warmer shapes of blurry pigment and texture.  Lines of darker, cool colors are a point of focus, while at the same time leading the eye of the viewer back to what seems to be the vastness of the rest of the canvas.

This body of work represents for the artist, an exploration of Cole’s memory of emotion over time.  Cole’s practice is one of personal evaluation.  The artist uses her instinctual response to this processing of decisions, consequences, and choices to complete her paintings.  These paintings represent for Cole a distillation of memories, both painful and precious, and explore how this process relates to the commonality of human exchange and interaction.
