Artist’s Statement
I’m grateful to be an artist because it allows me to share my view of the world with people. I use careful focus when I practice my art, and I try to stay present and have full awarenesses in the moment. I’ve loved painting since I was a child, and I learned how to do it by watching my father paint. I started taking serious lessons from him when I was eleven years old and he taught me the basic elements of painting. Later, I attended the Lyme Academy of Fine Art in Connecticut for further training before I started exhibiting and selling my paintings. I am pleased to show my paintings with the Canal Street Art Gallery and I hope you will enjoy my work.
Biography
Gretchen Schmid, daughter of the painter Richard Schmid, began her studies with him at an early age. Clearly intent on following her love of art, she continued her studies in the classical tradition of painting at the American Academy of Art and The Palette and Chisel Academy, both of Chicago. While pursuing her studies later at the Lyme Academy in Connecticut, Gretchen entered the professional art world with exhibitions and sales of her work in various galleries in the United States.
Though she explores all manner of subjects, her skill and fondness for painting people has established her a well-deserved reputation as a portrait painter. Gretchen’s success as a portrait artist is derived from her earliest experiences growing up in an artistic home and her exposure to the highest standards of painting. Her love of portraiture and insistence upon perfection underlie her reputation for excellence in this specialty.
