Artist’s Statement
“My work is more than a random assortment of material, it is a studied chronicle of objects that give form and design to the flotsam and jetsam of my life.
Although my works deny rationale, I invite the viewer to participate in the imaginative life of my assemblages, and to rejoice with me in the spirit of creativity.
In my teens I decided not to come to the end of my life and discover that I hadn’t lived it, so I set about packing it in with an emphasis on adventure travel.
Some of the highlights are: working as a student tour guide in Europe for 10 years, with extensive bike travel. Traversing the lengths of both the Volga River and the Amazon river by small boat. A dog sled expedition in the Arctic. Learning to fly a Helicopter, and co-piloting a chopper across America: not your average taxi ride!
At age 85 I feel I’ve done a pretty good job of it, but make no mistake: my knapsack is packed and sitting by the door!”
- Sloan Dawson
Biography
Sloane Dawson works with found objects, creating assemblages which both deny rationale and serve as a studied chronicle of the artist’s self described life of adventure and travel.
Her work is dictated by the objects she finds, and expresses both the whit and wisdom which come from her long career in art and her expeditions around the world. Dawson still keeps her knapsack packed and sitting by the door, ready at once for the next adventure.
